A poker player is a person who plays a card game called “poker”. The players themselves are divided into numerous types. In the past, the game of poker had an unenviable reputation, it was associated only with gambling and illegal criminal activity on the sidelines of criminal authority. Today poker is a major media event. Some poker players in the U.S. are treated as celebrities along with famous actors and athletes, and the poker tournaments themselves are broadcast on leading channels around the world.
If 20 years ago, when asked, “Who are you by profession?” You would answer that you are a professional poker player and would be laughed at. Today you would be looked at with respect and interest as the best professional players in the world look at you. In addition, sports stars and Hollywood are increasingly concluding contracts with leading poker operators. Among them are Rafael Nadal, Boris Becker, Mario Basler, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin Hart and many others.
Who are the most famous poker players?
As mentioned in the beginning, most of the famous poker players are from the USA.
Famous player Daniel Negreanu (under the name “KidPoker”) from Canada. Daniel is a leading player in live tournaments with an incredible total win of $35,924,594. He is also one of the most popular players in the poker industry due to his relaxed manner of playing and respectful behavior at the poker table. In the second season of High Stakes Poker against Gus Hansen, he lost a large one-handed sum of $575,700. Despite this major loss, he remained calm and behaved like a gentleman.
Negrean won 6 bracelets at the WSOP, he won 103 times and only Phil Helmut could earn more.
For many years he was also the ambassador for the PokerStars brand.
Another stellar representative of the poker arena is Phil Ivy. They say he is the best player in poker history. There is no tournament, no cash game, no live tournament at Unlimited Hold’em, no Pot Limit Omaha at high limits, wherever Phil has distinguished himself.
Ivy is a regular at the so-called “Big Game” held in Las Vegas at the Bellagio Casino, with incredible blinds reaching $4,000/$8,000. And his game with Andrew Bill, a billionaire from Texas, in which he won $16 million and went down in history.
Phil has 10 WSOP bracelets in his moneybox in Las Vegas and nearly $24 million in tournament prizes. It should be noted that his total winnings in online cache games are over $50 million.
Phil Helmut, alias Poker Brat, owner of fourteen WSOP bracelets. This is a record number of bracelets that no player has. He also won the WSOP Series 128 times, as well as the youngest winner of the WSOP Main Event, which he won in 1989 when he was 24 years old.
His prize money now totals $22 million, which he earned through live tournaments at Unlimited Texas Hold’em. In addition to his unique gaming abilities, the player’s distinctive feature is his lack of restraint at the poker table. During one of the WSOP Series Main Events, Phil verbally insulted his opponent by calling him an “idiot” several times over the course of 3 minutes. In another tournament, he cursed his opponent and accused him of failing to even write the word “poker”. It’s obvious that Phil doesn’t like to lose and can’t miss a moment to comment on the actions of his opponents during his unsuccessful hand.
Some of this player’s statements speak for his ego:
“If there was no luck factor in poker, I think I’d win everyone.”
“I revolutionized the way you play Texas Hold’em.“
Among the famous and brilliant players there are many others, whose biography can be found on the Internet.
Are there any famous players from Germany?
Germany is the second largest gambling market after the USA. However, its popularity through the media is not as high as in the USA, so German poker players are not as well known as American poker players. Among the most famous German professional poker players are Boris Becker and Mario Basler, but they are ambassadors of operators working for the brand on a contract basis rather than classical professional players.
Not many people know that German players are among the best and they are the ones who dominate the high roller niche. Even Daniel Negreanu, one of the leading players in the world, openly claims a high percentage of really decent players from Germany.
One of the most successful poker players in Germany is not anyone else, but Fedor Holtz. Holz is an exceptional player who won almost 27 million dollars in online poker prizes and almost 3 million dollars in online poker 24 years ago. He has signed a contract with one of our partners, the operator PartyPoker and has been working with him since 2017. Fedor Holtz is among the best tournament players.
One of his biggest achievements was winning the Super Hyroler Tournament in Paranac in the Philippines, where he won almost $3.5 million in prizes.
Speaking of German poker players, Fedor Holtz is in the top position.
But there’s another player we can’t ignore because he’s the one who caused the poker boom in Germany, winning $9 million in prizes at the Main Event WSOP 2011 in Las Vegas, playing against thousands of players at the world’s largest tournament. Not much has been known about his career since then.
Pius Heinz is not the best poker player, but certainly not the worst. But this is an example, like Chris Moneymaker 2003, that anything is possible in poker and that anyone can dramatically change their life.
Other successful players include Christoph Vogelsang who won $16 million in prizes, Dominic Niche, Tobias Rankemeyer, Rainer Kempe, all of whom won over $10 million in prizes at various poker venues. They are all excellent professional players, just not as well known as Fedor Holtz or Pius Heinz.
What categories do poker players fall into?
Poker is a rather complex game that gives players the opportunity to develop their own style of play. Of course, every professional poker player has a certain strategy and certain chances to succeed in the long run, but each of them has their own path.
What do I need to do in order to become a good poker player?
If you have a thorough knowledge of poker rules, sufficient motivation, patience and hard work, then you have no obstacles to a successful career as a poker player. Thousands of players around the world are successful poker players earning money. But knowledge of the rules and basics alone is not enough.
